How to Neutralize Acid Reflux

Excess stomach acid due to conditions such as acid reflux disease and gastritis can produce a host of symptoms such as abdominal bloating, nausea, belching, a dry cough and vomiting. Fortunately, there are ways to control these conditions and gain relief. The key is neutralizing stomach acid.

Instructions

    1

Take antacids to fight acid. Over-the-counter (OTC) and prescription antacids are designed to stop the production of stomach acid and ease symptoms of reflux. Purchase an OTC antacid to improve symptoms, or ask a doctor for a prescription drug like Nexium to neutralize stomach acid.

    2

Stay away from cigarettes. Smoking cigarettes weakens the muscles in the lower half of the esophagus, and this weakness contributes to the back flow of acid into the throat. Smoking also increase acid in the stomach. Give up cigarettes to neutralize acid and improve acid reflux.

    3

Consume smaller meals. Overeating or eating large meals encourages the production of excess stomach acid. Reduce your portions and consume four to six smaller meals to decrease the likelihood of reflux disease.

    4

Watch your diet. Certain foods and drinks also stimulate the production of acid in the stomach. To neutralize acid, limit your intake of (or completely eliminate) fried foods, spicy foods, acidic foods, caffeine, onions and peppermint.

    5

Drink plenty of water. Increase your water intake--especially when taking medications--to improve digestion and reduce acid. Drink at least eight glasses of water a day.

    6

Wear loose clothing. Tight clothing around the stomach or mid-section can put added pressure on the stomach, and push stomach acid upwards into the throat. Keep your clothes (belts and pants) loose to reduce reflux.
