Heartburn affects approximately 50 million people each year, and it is a condition that can become chronic. When acid refluxes, or flows backwards into the esophagus, which is not protected by a lining like the stomach, you may experience a burning sensation in your throat or chest. If this happens more than once a week, you may be suffering from chronic heartburn. By making some simple changes in your daily habits, you will decrease the frequency of symptoms associated with this condition.
Instructions
- 1
Loosen up your clothing. The constriction of tight clothes, especially around the stomach area can worsen symptoms of heartburn, or acid reflux.
2Stop smoking and try to relax. Both of these things are associated with increased heartburn.
3Eat small portion slowly. Eating too quickly does not enable your system to digest correctly and will worsen the condition.
4Stay away from coffee, carbonated drinks, and alcohol. They all cause increased incidence of acid reflux.
5Foods that are spicy foods, raw onions, garlic or citrus can increase symptoms of heartburn.
6Antacid such as tums can neutralize stomach acids.
7H2 Receptor Blockers like Pepcid AC can help stop the release of stomach acids which will decrease symptoms of heartburn.
8Prilosec decreases the amount of acid before heartburn begins.
9There are other over the counter and prescription medications that may help reduce the incidence of heartburn or acid reflux. Talk to your doctor for any severe symptoms that may require more than over the counter heartburn medications.
