Water Fasting for Weight Loss

People have attacked weight-loss ambitions with a variety of methods, and many choose to start their diet with a shock to the body. Water fasting is one of the most difficult fasting methods. No other drinks or food are consumed during the water fasting period.

Process

    Water fasts of less than 48 hours can be done by almost anyone without medical supervision. Drink at least half of the body weight in purified water each day during the fast.

Time Frame

    Typical water fasts lasts from one to 30 days. Beginners should try a one- to two-day fast to see how the body reacts to the process.

Benefits

    Each pound of body fat equals 3,500 calories; therefore, water fasting is an excellent way to drop pounds and purify. According to Vanderbilt University, this method of fasting can also be used to treat colds and allergies.

Risks

    Side effects of water fasting include headaches, muscle pain and nausea. In addition, fasting can cause blackouts, vomiting and diarrhea.

Warning

    Consult a physician before considering a long fast. People who are pregnant, malnourished or have heart or immunity issues should avoid water fasting.
