Citric acid is a water-soluble organic acid. It is often found in the juices of vegetables and citrus fruits such as lemons and it can be used in carbonated drinks as flavoring.
History
Citric acid was discovered by alchemist Jabir Ibn Hayyan. However, Swedish chemist Carl Wilhelm Scheele was the first to isolate citric acid from lemon juice in 1784.
Kidney Health
According to the European Citric Acid Manufacturers Association, citric acid is produced by fermentation processes using natural, renewable raw materials such as molasses and other carbohydrates. It is a natural way to help break down kidney stones by helping balance out the acids that are in urine.
Digestive Health
Citric acid found in fruits such as lemon can help promote digestion. Drinking lemon juice or lemon water during illness can help control the bowel and, in some cases, can help prevent constipation.
Heartburn
Citric acid does have some adverse health effects, including heartburn. Those who suffer from heartburn often do not benefit from drinking citrus juices or carbonated beverages that use citric acid as an additive to enhance flavor.
Warning
When in contact with the eyes, citric acid can cause a burning sensation. A high concentration of citric acid in contact with hair can bleach or damage it.
