For those who want a fast detox, a one- to three-day juice fast will help cleanse the system. Whether you ate too much junk food and want to flush the system or just want a simple cleaning, juice fasts are filled with fiber, nutrients and antioxidants that the body needs to repair itself and continue with daily function. Those who take medication or suffer from any ailments should seek a doctor's advice before starting a detox.
Juice Fast
Before the fast detox begins, prepare the body by slowly reducing the consumption of caffeine, dairy, sugar, and protein. Begin eating more raw fruits and vegetables to get nutrients and antioxidants into the body.
Use a juicer during the fast to get 32 to 64 oz. of fresh, organic juice for the duration of the detox. Citrus fruits should be avoided since they metabolize differently than other fruits. Enjoy vegetables such as carrots, cabbage, and celery and fruits like apples, bananas, pineapple and mango.
In addition to the 32 to 64 oz. of juice, drink 64 oz. of filtered water, preferably at room temperature for easier digestion.
Side Effects
As with any detox that restricts calories, side effects may occur. Common side effects include tiredness, headaches, constipation, low blood pressure, weight loss, hunger and dizziness. Thus, a fast detox should only last one to three days to prevent listed symptoms or diarrhea. Diarrhea will cause dehydration and loss of electrolytes, so it is important to drink plenty of water and fresh juice.
Prolonged detox diets may lead to nutrient deficiency and muscle loss.
Breaking the Detox
After the detox is finished, it is important to incorporate foods back into the system slowly. On the day after the juice detox, begin to eat raw fruits and vegetables. The second day, incorporate rice, grains and light proteins such as eggs into the diet, and by the third day, regular food may be consumed.
Try to eat a healthier diet after the fast detox to prolong the positive effects such as an increase in energy, clearer skin and renewed focus. Eating natural foods also reduces the amount of free radicals and toxins the body and organs accumulate.
