Health Benefits of Almonds

Health Benefits of Almonds

The midsummer months bring in fresh almonds, which are by far the tastiest variety, though packaged almonds are always readily available. While almonds are called nuts, they are actually seeds of the fruit that grows on almond trees. They are crunchy and have a distinct, appealing taste. They also offer health benefits to those who consume them.

Heart Disease

Almonds help to lower the risk of heart disease and heart attacks. They do this by lower the LDL (or bad) cholesterol in the body by significant amounts.

Magnesium

A cup of almonds contain 99 mg of magnesium, which is almost thirty percent of what you need each day. Magnesium helps to improve the flow of blood, nutrients and oxygen throughout the body.

Potassium

Potassium, an important electrolyte, is found in almonds. It helps with nerve functioning and also aids in the contraction of the heart muscles.

Weight Loss

A study in the International Journal of Obesity and Related Metabolic Disorders showed that a low calorie almond diet helped people lose more weight faster than those on a low calorie diet high in complex carbohydrates.

Protein

A quarter cup of almonds contains more protein than a whole egg.
