High Carb Diet for Acid Reflux

High-carb diets are designed to promote weight loss through taking in high amounts of carbohydrates while limiting the fat content in your meals. If you suffer from acid reflux, a high-carb diet can help out tremendously, as many fatty and acidic foods are known to cause problems with the acid building up in your stomach and filtering to your esophagus.

What to Eat

Start off by looking through your kitchen, and anything containing more than about 10 g of fat should be tossed out or put aside for a "cheat" day. Many people who do this diet are allowed at least one cheat day a week when they can eat whatever they want however. If you are suffering from acid reflux, you should still be very weary as some foods will still build up the acid no matter how well you are doing on your diet. After tossing out those fatty foods, it is time to pick up foods from the grocery store that are good for you.

Getting your dairy in is very easy and requires merely reading your nutrition facts. Fat-free and low-fat milks and cheeses will be your best friend during this diet as they are high in carbs and very low in fat content. For snacks, pick up a couple plain low-fat yogurts which not only taste good for snacks but also help keep your diet in check.

Pastas are the best way to keep yourself nourished during the diet as they contain high amounts of carbs with relatively little fats and, mixed with marinara sauce, will be one of the tastiest meals you will have. Breakfasts should consist mainly of oatmeal, which will start your day off very well with the carb content helping wake you up and give you energy throughout the day. The grains are very much one of the backbones of this diet.

Meats get slightly tricky, as many meats are known for causing extra acid to be built up and cause it to reflux. Thankfully, there are still lean meats in the diet that will help get your carb and protein intake in. Turkey and chicken can be eaten to your heart's content, but the one modification to be made before eating is to remove the skin so you are eating just the white meat and none of the fatty part of the meat. Unbreaded fish and water-packed tuna are also staples of this diet, as they will keep your protein up and allow you to keep muscle that you have put on.

What to Avoid

Anything with a high amount of fat should be immediately avoided. Whole milks, alfredo sauce and mayo are the biggest offenders and should be avoided at all costs. If it says there is more than a couple of grams of fat in the product, eating it will disrupt your diet. Other foods that should be avoided are ice cream, cookies, cake, all beef and pork products, orange juice and cheeses with high fat content.

If these foods are avoided and you can consistently stick to this diet, not only will you begin losing weight, but your acid reflux will begin to dissipate and you will be able to go along life problem-free without the heartburn and indigestion that usually occurs. So go out and begin cleaning out that fridge and get ready to see a better you.
