Gastroesophageal reflux--commonly referred to as acid reflux or GERD--is a digestive disorder characterized by the back flow of food and liquid into the esophagus. Different factors contribute to acid reflux, and symptoms normally develop after eating. You may deal with nausea, heartburn and occasional regurgitation. But fortunately, there are ways to cure GERD and alleviate symptoms.

Eliminate certain foods from your diet. Certain foods and beverages such as fatty foods, citrus foods, tomato-based foods, chocolate and caffeine can cause gastroesophageal reflux. Track your symptoms and identify foods that trigger reflux.
2Lose weight. Carrying extra pounds around the midsection contributes to reflux disease. Establish a workout and diet plan, and shed excess weight to control symptoms. Reduce your calorie intake, eliminate fatty and sugar foods, and work out for 30 to 60 minutes at least three times a week.
3Remain upright after eating. Laying down after eating can trigger gastroesophageal reflux. Remain in a standing or sitting position after meals, and eat at least two to three hours before bed.
4Keep your head elevated at night. GERD symptoms may develop at night. To alleviate symptoms and keep liquids and food in your stomach, sleep with your head elevated. Use wood blocks to raise the head of your bed by 6 to 9 inches.
5Take medications. Over-the-counter antacids control gastroesophageal reflux by reducing the production of stomach acid. If your symptoms don't respond to OTC drugs, talk to your doctor about prescription acid neutralizers
