What Are Protein Diet Side Effects?

Some of the more popular high-protein diets include Atkins, Zone Diet, Protein Powers and Sugar Busters. These diets increase protein substantially while simultaneously decreasing carbohydrates. An "American Journal of Physiology" study showed that a group of people eating a high-protein diet (1g protein per 1 lb. body weight) burned more fat than a group that ate the recommended daily allowance of protein. A high-protein diet can be an effective weight loss tool. There are side effects and concerns that should be known before choosing this eating plan, however.

AMA Opinion

The American Heart Association (AMA) does not recommend the commercial high protein diets because they are not nutritionally balanced and often restrict important health foods like vegetables, fruits and whole grains. While these diets may be successful in weight loss, the AMA says that not enough research has been conducted on these types of weight-loss programs.

Considerations

A diet with an excessive amount of protein in the form of meats that are high in fat can contribute to high cholesterol and heart disease. Too much protein in a diet has also been connected to the development of gout, kidney problems and liver problems.

Benefits

Some high protein diets cause the body to go into ketosis. This is your body's starvation mode. It begins to burn fats instead of carbohydrates. Ketosis often causes bad breath and contributes to a feeling of nausea. It can also cause a feeling of low energy.

Effects

One side effect of protein is that it increases the sense of fullness (or satiety). This is important because it was more effective in this than fats or carbohydrates. Therefore, higher protein consumption can decrease appetite.

Warning

High protein diets can help in weight loss. Increasing protein in a diet that has enough fats and carbohydrates may be a positive change. However, there are many high protein diets and some may have serious side effects. Research the plan you are interested in and discuss any change with your medical provider to ensure it is the best choice for you.
