High acid production, also called heartburn, can cause a burning sensation in the stomach and the esophagus. Stress and certain foods can bring on this sensation. A number of foods, however, can help counteract an acidic stomach. Add this to my Recipe Box.
High Pectin Foods
Pectin is a type of fiber in many fruits that has beneficial properties for digestion. It aids in mucus development and the lessening of stomach acid. Apples, bananas, beets and carrots all have this effect.
Starchy Foods
Certain starchy foods have been shown to have demulcent properties, which aid in calming acidic stomachs. Oats, wheat and rice all have this property and can buffer acidity. Starch-laden vegetables, such as potatoes, have the same effect.
Lean Protein
Lean protein, such as turkey or chicken, acts as a neutralizer to acid and should be opted for over red meats. The natural oils in fish, such as salmon, also act to coat the stomach and relieve irritation from acidity.
Fiber
Any fruit or vegetable, except for citrus, works to buffer acidic stomachs through the large quantities of fiber they contain. Whole grains will also help with this, and brown rice, quinoa and barley all reduce stomach acid production.
