How Does Nexium Work?

How Does Nexium Work?

Nexium, also known as the healing purple pill, is an FDA-approved drug that works to relieve the pain and discomfort caused by acid reflux disease, stomach ulcers, indigestion and heartburn. Nexium can also work to repair damage to the stomach lining and esophagus resulting from acid reflux disease. It is composed of the compound esomeprazole and manufactured as a delayed-release capsule. This medication is available in the USA, Australia and Canada.

Esomeprazole

Esomeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor that works to decrease gastric acid production and secretion into the stomach. This action decreases the amount of acid in the stomach that can attack the esophagus in acid-reflux disease. Limiting acid production helps relieve heartburn pain and enables the stomach to repair damage to its lining caused by excessive production of stomach acid.

Delayed-Release Capsule System

The delayed-release capsule system is in the form of a multiple unit pellet system (MUPS). The capsule is composed of micro eteric-coated pellets of esomeprazole. When the capsule enters the stomach, it swells from water absorption. This causes the capsule shell to break open and release the pellets into the target problem areas of the stomach.

Side Effects

Possible side effects are headache, diarrhea and stomach pain.
