Foods That Cause Indigestion

Indigestion occurs when excess acid is produced in the stomach and then leaks into the esophagus. This is also known as acid reflux, or heartburn. There are many foods that make heartburn worse, so avoiding them may help eliminate the symptoms of indigestion.

Caffeine

Food and drinks containing caffeine will make indigestion worse. The caffeine can relax the sphincter at the top of the esophagus, making it easier for acid to leak upward from the stomach.

Peppermint and Chocolate

Peppermint and chocolate can both relax the sphincter at the top of the esophagus and make indigestion worse.

Acidic Foods

Acidic foods will create even more acid in the stomach and worsen indigestion. Foods such as tomatoes and citrus fruits should be avoided.

Fatty Foods

Fried and fatty foods can create indigestion.

Carbonated Beverages

Carbonated beverages fill the stomach with air, and push the stomach contents upward and place pressure on the sphincter between your stomach and esophagus. This pressure can allow some of the stomach's acidic contents to reflux, causing indigestion.
