How to Lose Weight Before Heart Surgery

Heart surgery can be more complicated for patients who are overweight or obese. Many times, physicians will recommend that their patients lose weight before heart surgery, to increase their chances of a positive surgical outcome. Because obesity often contributes to high blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes and other conditions that may complicate heart surgery, it is important to get your weight under control, to aid the body in healing.

Instructions

    1

With your cardiologist's approval, exercise 30 minutes a day for 5 to 6 days a week in the days preceding surgery. Although strenuous exercise may not be possible, activities such as swimming, walking, mild weightlifting, yoga, pilates and ballroom dancing are good exercises for those who should not substantially increase their heart rate, but who want the fitness benefits of exercise.

    2

Eat raw foods as much as possible. Increase your intake of vegetables and greens. These are heart-healthy foods that are high in nutrients and low in calories.

    3

Eliminate all processed foods from your diet. Read labels on the food you purchase. In addition, limit carbohydrates, including bread, pasta and cereals.

    4

Eat a complete breakfast that has a fruit, protein, a small amount of carbohydrate and dairy. Milk has been shown to increase weight loss. The Journal of Nutrition did a study that linked weight loss to increased milk consumption. Fat-free or low-fat milk is recommended.

    5

Eat cabbage soup consisting of a head of cabbage, sliced carrots, onions, lean chicken, celery and chicken or beef broth. Bring to a boil, and cook until the cabbage is tender. Eat daily as a replacement for lunch or dinner to increase weight loss.

    6

Eat foods that are considered "heart healthy," such as blueberries, salmon, soy protein, oatmeal and spinach. These foods are good for strengthening the heart and for weight loss, according to the Mayo Clinic.

    7

Drink 64 ounces of water daily to flush the system of toxins and contribute to a feeling of fullness for faster weight loss. Aim to lose 2 pounds or more per week following this weight-loss plan.
