Protein Supplement Dangers

More and more people are using protein supplements in attempt to build muscle and lose fat. However, there are a number of dangers to protein supplementation that users should know about.

Ketosis

Excess protein causes a buildup of toxic ketones in your blood stream, which is called ketosis. Your kidneys and heart have to work extra hard to remove these, and dehydration, calcium deficiency, bad breath, and dizziness or weakness can occur.

Increased Cancer Risk

According to the American Institute for Cancer Research and the World Cancer Research Fund, studies have shown links between excessive protein and certain cancers, such as liver, kidney, colon and breast cancers.

Calcium-Related Illnesses

High-protein diets and supplementation are believed to be chief causes of osteoporosis and calcium stones. Multiple medical studies have shown a larger amount of calcium excreted in the urine of people who are on high protein diets.

Pregnancy Difficulties

Studies by the Colorado Center for Reproductive Medicine noted women with excess protein in their diets may have difficulties conceiving. These studies suggest women who want to become pregnant should avoid protein supplementation unless directed by a doctor.

Long-Term Effects

Kidney disease, liver disease and heart disease are all believed to be linked to long-term excess of protein. All three can be fatal.
