Foods for GERD Sufferers

Heartburn is one of the main symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Certain foods are less likely to cause heartburn. If you have GERD, you will want to become familiar with these foods.

Fruits and Vegetables

Apples, bananas, carrots, cabbage and broccoli will not usually cause heartburn. Stay away from fruits and vegetables that contain a lot of acid. Adding cream or butter to vegetables is not advised.

Meats

Extra lean beef and skinless chicken are good foods to eat when you have GERD. Try to avoid frying, butter or spicy seasonings.

Dairy

Feta and goat cheese, cream cheese and soy cheese are good choices. Stay away from dairy products such as ice cream and cottage cheese.

Beverages

Avoid caffeinated drinks and alcoholic beverages. Water is best for people suffering with GERD.

Sweets and Snacks

Fat-free cookies, baked potato chips and jelly beans are good choices for snacks. Avoid chocolate, regular potato chips and corn chips.
