According to bellaonline.com, 200 medicinal drugs and their sources can be linked to Native Americans' use of healing plants, including the use of willow tree bark to treat aches and pains. The bark contains salicin, also acetylsalicylic acid, the active ingredient in aspirin.
Function
Buy slippery elm bark in the form of pills, powder or lozenges. Slippery elm is the inner bark from a tree native to North America and used by Native Americans for the treatment of heartburn, diarrhea, sore throat and pain associated with stomach ulcer. Slippery elm contains mucilage that, when mixed with water, coats the mouth, esophagus and GI tract to relieve inflammation. It also promotes mucous production in the GI tract for extra protection.
Usage
Pour two cups of boiling water over approximately two tablespoons of finely powdered slippery elm, Let it soak for three to five minutes and drink as a tea. The tea must be consumed three times a day for full effect.
There is also a coarse powdered form of slippery elm and is used for a poultice--this form is not used for heartburn treatment.
Take pills and lozenges as recommended on packaging. Lozenges can also be used for sore throat and cough. Never estimate the milligrams for an adult or child. If in doubt consult a physician that specializes in alternative medicine.
Warnings
Use caution when taking slippery elm. No side effects have been reported, but herbs can interact with one another and allergic reactions can occur. If taking any other alternative supplement, or if you are pregnant, consult a doctor before taking slippery elm.
