Diet to Relieve Gastric Acid

Certain foods and activities can weaken the muscle located in the lower part of the esophagus, allowing gastric acid to splash up into it. This may cause heartburn and chest discomfort, creating a condition called acid reflux. If this conditions worsens, it can progress to GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease).

Foods to Avoid

Coffee (caffeinated and decaffeinated) has been shown to weaken the muscle in the lower sphincter. Other foods that should be avoided include fatty or fried foods, whole milk (4 percent), chocolate, peppermint, spearmint, citrus fruits and juices, caffeinated beverages, and spicy or acidic foods.

Recommended Foods

Vegetables and fruits are part of a healthy diet, even more so in the case of acid reflux. However, they must be kept as fresh and natural as possible. Low-fat meats such as chicken, fish and turkey are also recommended to decrease acid reflux.

Activities to Avoid

Chewing gum increases the amount of swallowed air, which leads to frequent belching, giving gastric acid the opportunity to splash up into your esophagus. Also, lying down immediately after eating, wearing tight clothes and eating in big quantities increases the chances of acid reflux.
