Acid reflux, or heartburn, can cause discomfort and lead to long-term damage such as ulcers if not managed. The pain usually starts out in the stomach and moves up towards the neck to the esophagus. People who are overweight or pregnant may have an increased likelihood of experiencing acid reflux. A few simple diet and lifestyle changes to reduce the acidity in your stomach can help get you on track to reduce the painful effects of acid reflux.
Instructions
- 1
Avoid foods that cause acidity, such as fried and spicy foods, processed sweets, beef and dairy products. Citrus fruits and juices, such as grapefruits and lemonade, can be problematic for an acidic stomach. There are also beverages that should be avoided, such as coffee, alcohol, caffeinated tea and soda.
2Eat smaller portions at mealtimes. Consuming less food gives your stomach an opportunity to digest the food and reduces the symptoms of acid reflux.
3Stop smoking. This unhealthy habit can increase acid secretion and can reduce the production of saliva, which helps neutralize acid.
4Avoid taking a nap after eating and eating right before bed. Gravity helps move foods through your body and your digestive tract, but this process doesn't take place as fast when lying down.
