Acid reflux occurs when excess stomach acid travels back up the esophagus and into the throat. Symptoms can range from mild to severe and can oftentimes be reduced by monitoring food consumption.
Greasy Foods
Greasy foods are high on the list of those that cause acid reflux. Fried foods and meats with a high fat content fall within this category, as well. Many fried foods can be prepared using alternative methods, such as baking, for overall healthier results.
Spicy Foods
Spicy foods should be eliminated whenever possible. This is especially true for those that contain black pepper and hot sauces. Garlic has also been known to frequently induce acid reflux symptoms.
Beverages
Several common beverages play a big role in acid reflux. These include alcohol, coffee, soda, hot cocoa, whole milk and citrus-based juices. Water is the recommended substitute.
Chocolate
Chocolate and other dessert foods that contain a high butter content can trigger acid reflux. Recipes containing peppermint can also pose a problem.
Vegetables
Vegetables such as tomatoes, onions and green peppers should be eaten sparingly. Prepackaged foods that contain these ingredients should also be avoided.
