High Acid Diet

A high acid diet causes the body to become more acidic. Certain foods like beef and grains are more acidic in nature. People need to balance their acidic and alkaline food intake to maintain a normal pH level in their bodies. Many people have acid reflux problems because they do not consume enough alkaline foods.

  1. Body pH Level & Disease

    • A body pH level is measured on a scale of 0 to 14, with the high end representing an alkaline state and the low end representing an acidic state. The pH measurement is actually an acid-alkaline ratio. It refers to the state of the body's fluids and tissues. The body is constantly trying to balance itself between positively charged ions (acid-forming) and negatively charged ions (alkaline-forming). The average person has a pH balance between 6.0 and 7.5.

      A high acid diet can make you more prone to age-related muscle loss, kidney stones, osteoporosis, autoimmune diseases and even cancer. A more acidic state robs the body of essential minerals and nutrients. It also indicates a lack of digestive enzymes because you probably are not consuming enough vegetables, which contain these enzymes. As you get older, it becomes more important to watch your pH levels. They decrease in both quantity and activity level.

    Acidic & Alkaline Foods

    • Most animal meats (beef, turkey, fish and pork) are highly acidic, as are grains such as wheat, corn, rice, barley and oats (rolled). Other acidic foods include most dairy products (milk, cheese and butter), some nuts (cashews, peanuts, pecans and walnuts), pasta, potatoes, beans, legumes, green peas, cranberries, most oils (canola, corn, flax and olive) and alcoholic beverages.

      Alkaline foods include all raw vegetables, most frozen and canned vegetables, and fruits. Other foods with high alkaline levels are eggs, sweet potatoes, chicken breast, millet, cottage cheese, almonds and most nuts, yogurt, whey protein powder, spices (such as cinnamon, ginger and mustard), all herbs, apple cider, juices and stevia, a sweetener.

    Balancing Your Diet

    • Keeping the various foods in mind, you need to balance your diet between acidic and alkaline foods. If you are not eating enough vegetables and fruits, chances are that you have a more acidic pH level. Some health advocates say that the best diet is one that is 75% alkaline and 25% acidic in foods by volume. You can periodically test your pH level with test strips.
