Diet for Sun Sensitivity

Sun sensitivity, known medically as photosensitivity, can cause itchy, red, irritable skin. People with this condition can avoid symptoms by making smart food choices.

Identification

    Sun sensitivity is suspected when the immune system reacts to sunlight in the form of a rash where the skin has been exposed to the sun. Diet is not a common cause of the condition, but there are some fruits and vegetables that can trigger symptoms.

Triggers

    Lime juice, mango peel, carrots, parsley, celery and figs might cause sun sensitivity if they make contact with the skin. Typically, contact results in a darkening of the areas of the skin that are exposed to sunlight.

Prevention

    Avoid the trigger fruits and vegetables if the skin becomes red and itchy as a result of close contact. Since photosensitivity is a reaction of the immune system, eat a balanced diet rich in immune-boosting nutrients such as vitamin C, zinc and vitamin E. Foods to choose from can include spinach, kiwi, sweet potatoes, shrimp, plain yogurt and lean ham.
