How to Clean Your Liver

The liver is responsible for more than 500 body functions including processing, breaking down and removing environmental chemicals and pollutants that enter the body. With all the pollutants entering your system as food additives, environmental pollutants and pesticides, the liver can become congested and fail to fully remove the toxins from your bloodstream. A liver cleanse at least once a year will clean out your liver, allowing it to properly remove toxins, which will give you more energy, balanced hormones and, overall, a healthier functioning body.

    Prepare your body for the liver cleanse for 4 to 5 days prior to beginning the actual cleanse. Continue your regular diet, and add to it 8 oz. of apple juice every 2 to 3 hours

    Begin your liver cleanse. On the first day of the cleanse, eat a light, low-fat breakfast. Be sure to include an 8 oz. glass of apple juice with your breakfast. You may continue to drink apple juice, but do not eat anything more after your light breakfast.

    Six hours after your light breakfast, mix 3 cups of water with 4 tbsp. of Epsom salt. Pour the mixture into a glass jar, shake well and chill in a refrigerator or cooler.

    Four hours after you make your mixture, drink 3/4 cup of the mixture. This mixture may be particularly unpleasant to taste. Rest for two hours.

    After 2 hours, drink another 3/4 cup of the mixture. It is important to rest in between drinking the mixture.

    After 1 hour 45 minutes, pour 1/2 cup of virgin olive oil and 1/2 to 3/4 cup of grapefruit or lemon juice in a glass jar. Shake vigorously until all the fruit's pulp is dissolved and the two liquids are thoroughly blended.

    Drink the grapefruit-olive oil mixture. Try to drink the mixture within 15 minutes of preparing it.

    Lay down immediately. Do not do anything else, go straight to your bed and lay with your knees tucked up to your chest for at least 20 minutes. After the first 20 minutes, you can resume your normal sleeping position until you wake in the morning.

    In the morning, drink another 3/4 cup of the Epsom salt mixture. Try to drink this entire dose within 15 minutes. Go back to bed and try to rest and be as still as possible.

    After two hours, drink your final 3/4 cup of the Epsom salt mixture. Rest for two more hours.

    Add clear liquids into your diet. After the last dose of the Epsom salt mixture, wait 2 hours and begin to add clear liquids such as white grape juice, club soda and chicken broth back into your diet. After two additional hours, begin to add fruit, and two hours after that, you can resume your normal diet.
