If you enjoy fresh-squeezed orange juice---or if you simply have an excess of oranges from an exceptionally productive tree---you can juice your own oranges at home. While it might seem necessary to peel each orange to crush the tender innards, you can juice oranges much more easily. Removing the peel is a time-consuming and potentially frustrating experience, especially if you intend to juice more than a few oranges. Instead, save yourself the time and trouble by leaving the peel on the oranges while you juice them. Add this to my Recipe Box.
Instructions
- 1
Wash your oranges thoroughly under cold running water. Even though you are leaving the peel, you still need to prevent any dirt, chemicals or other contaminants on the surface from entering the juice
2Cut each orange in half with the knife on the cutting board. A serrated knife may help you cut easily through the peel.
3Place half of an orange face-down on the citrus juicer so that the center of the cut side of the orange is aligned with the center point of the juicer.
4Press down on the orange gently but firmly while twisting the orange. You should begin to see juice---probably including seeds and pulp---pouring down into the base of the citrus juicer.
5Continue twisting the orange until you have extricated most of the juice. Depending on the shape of the orange, this might involve pushing the sides of the orange toward the center of the juicer while turning the orange. Discard the relatively empty peel of the half-orange you just juiced.
6Pour the juice from the juicer into one of your containers. If you have especially large or juicy oranges or a particularly small citrus juicer, you may need to do this before you are done juicing half of an orange. Simply pour the juice from the juicer into your container whenever the juicer is nearly full, then resume juicing where you left off.
7Continue juicing your orange halves on the juicer until you have juiced all of your oranges or obtained as much juice as you need or want.
8Hold the strainer directly over the empty container, then slowly pour your juice from the full container through the strainer into the empty container. This will remove the seeds and, depending on the size of the holes in the strainer, some or all of the pulp.
