Orange and Cranberry Juice Detox

Cranberry juice and orange juice are both extremely beneficial juices for detoxing the body. Cranberry juice contains antioxidants and is a known liver and kidney toner. Clinical trials have proven that cranberry juice can help urinary tract infections, for example. Dr. Anne Louise Gittleman has proposed a fast track liver cleanse that includes a cranberry and orange juice detoxification day.

The Liver

A healthy liver is one of the most important parts of a healthy digestive system, and healthy digestion helps to keep weight off, according to Dr. Gittelman. The liver, the largest internal organ, is responsible for breaking down toxins as they enter the body, among other functions. Keeping the liver healthy by occasionally detoxifying is important.

Three-Part Process

The fast the Dr. Gittlman suggests has three parts: a seven-day pre-fast, a one-day detoxifying cranberry juice and orange juice fast, and a three-day follow-up. This ensures that the fast is more about a way of life and changing lifestyle rather than an unhealthy quick fix program. The fact that you only fast for one day makes this fast a healthier and safer option.

Seven-Day Preparation

There are six steps to follow for the seven days before you fast. In these seven days, you are preparing your liver and colon for the fast so that the toxins that are eliminated will be properly processed by the body. First, each day, choose at lease one of the following foods to support your liver: crucifers, such as cabbage, cauliflower, brussel sprouts, broccoli and broccoli sprouts; green leafy vegetables and herbs, like parsley, kale, watercress, chard, cilantro, beet greens, escarole, dandelion greens and mustard greens; citrus, like oranges, lemons and limes (avoid grapefruit and grapefruit juice, which contain a compound called naringen that can interfere with the liver-cleansing process; sulfur-rich foods, like garlic, onions, eggs and daikon radish; liver healers, such as artichoke, asparagus, beets, celery, dandelion-root tea, whey and nutritional yeast flakes. Next, choose at least two of these foods for colon support: powdered psyllium husks, milled or ground flaxseeds, carrots, apples, pears or berries. Third, drink half your body weight in ounces of pure filtered water. Fourth, each day have two servings of meat or fish; or, if you are vegetarian, of spirulina. Fifth, make sure that you have at least 2 tbsp. of healthy oil, such as olive oil. Sixth, avoid excess fats, sugar, artificial sweeteners, refined carbohydrates and gluten, soy protein isolates and alcohol, caffeine and over-the-counter drugs.

The Orange Cranberry Juice Fast

You will need unsweetened cranberry juice diluted in water, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, freshly squeezed orange juice, freshly squeezed lemon juice and Stevia. The entire recipe is in Dr. Gittleman's book "The Fast Track Detox Diet." However, you can follow these four steps: Make your juice by bringing the cranberry water to a boil. Add spices, either directly to the juice or in a tea bag or ball. Simmer for 15 to 20 minutes. Add lemon, orange juice and Stevia to taste. Alternate 1 cup filtered water with 1 cup of the juice every hour. By the end of the day, you should have consumed at least 72 oz. of water. Next, at the beginning and end of your day, add 1 to 2 tsp. of either ground flaxseeds or psyllium husks to your water or juice. Finally, engage in 10 minutes of exercise during the day.

Three-Day Follow Up

For the three days following your fast, make sure to follow these steps. Each day have 1/2 cup of sauerkraut or yogurt. Before each meal, take one or more tablets of hydrochloric acid in a formula that contains at least 500 to 540 mg of betaine hydrochloride with at least 100 to 150 mg of pepsin, and at least 50 mg of ox bile extract. Last, for these three days, follow the steps you took in your pre-fast preparation.
