Acid reflux is a condition in which stomach acid backs up into the esophagus. An individual suffering from acid reflux experiences severe heartburn pain and discomfort. Spicy and acidic foods tend to make acid reflux worse. There are a number of foods that are safe for an individual with acid reflux and that may help reduce the occurrence of acid reflux pain.

Whole Grains

    Complex carbohydrates are safe foods for an individual suffering from acid reflux according to the Healthcastle Nutrition Inc. website. This group includes whole-grain bread, brown rice and whole-grain pasta. Complex carbohydrates help absorb acid in the stomach, reducing the amount that could possibly flow backwards into the esophagus. These relatively bland foods do not cause the stomach to produce excessive amounts of the acid that causes discomfort.

Low Fat Dairy and Protein

    Foods that are high in fat are digested slowly. When we eat fatty foods, they stay in the stomach for a long period of time, leading to the production of an abundance of stomach acid. Choose low-fat dairy and protein products. Skim milk, 1 percent milk and 2 percent milk are safest to drink. When eating yogurt, choose fat-free or low-fat varieties. Chicken, turkey and fish are good sources of protein for an individual battling acid reflux. Beef can be eaten as well, provided it is lean.

Fruits and Vegetables

    All vegetables are safe for an individual with acid reflux to eat, as long as they are left plain. Creamed and fried vegetables make acid reflux worse. Most fruits are safe to eat, with the exception of citrus fruits. Acid reflux sufferers should also avoid tomatoes.
