Diet for Reducing Acid & Gas

Acid reflux and gas are more often caused by the stomach producing too much acid than by the acids in the food you eat. As such, changing your diet to reduce acid and gas may not be as straightforward as it seems.

Acids and Alkalines

    The opposites of acidic foods are alkaline foods. Foods labeled as acidic encourage the production of stomach acids, which can lead to heartburn and gas. Common acidic foods are chocolate and fried food, while herbal teas and vegetables such as cucumber are alkaline.

Misconceptions

    People often think that milk will help acid reflux, but milk can actually encourage the stomach to overproduce acids. Another common belief is that citrus fruits can increase stomach acids, but citrus fruits are actually considered to be alkaline foods.

Non-Dietary Considerations

    Although diet is an important part in reducing acid and gas, it is not the entire solution. A large portion size can contribute to acid reflux as can eating too fast. Another effective way of preventing heartburn is to keep your head elevated during sleep.
