Acid Reflux Disease Home Remedy

Also referred to as gastro-esophogeal reflux, acid reflux is an uncomfortable digestive disorder that affects millions of people worldwide. It is a condition that results when a stomach valve called the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) malfunctions, allowing the contents of the stomach to backwash into the esophagus or food pipe. There are a number of home remedies that are used to treat this condition.

Baking Soda

Add half a teaspoon of baking soda to half a glass of water and stir thoroughly. Keep stirring until the baking soda is completely dissolved, and then drink it every two hours. The baking soda, also called sodium bicarbonate, serves as an antacid that neutralizes the gastric acid in the refluxed stomach fluids. Do not use this remedy if you are on a salt-restricted diet.

Soda Crackers

Soda crackers are a popular, traditional folk remedy for acid reflux. Soda crackers are not only bland, but they are also easy to digest and help to absorb gastric acid in the stomach. Furthermore, they are produced using sodium bicarbonate, which has a neutralizing effect on the stomach acids. Nibble on soda crackers throughout the day, or when you feel the onset of acid reflux.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is an age-old remedy for acid reflux that is safe and effective. Take two teaspoons of the apple cider vinegar at the first sign of the acid reflux. You will experience a mild burning sensation, but this will pass in less than a minute. If you find the taste unbearable, then dilute a tablespoon of the apple cider vinegar in a cup of warm water and drink this. You can sweeten the solution with honey.

Complex Carbohydrates

Eat foods that are complex carbohydrates (starches) such as brown rice and oatmeal. When eaten plain, brown rice and other complex carbohydrates are bland and thus less likely to relax the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) or increase the acidic levels of the stomach contents. You can also sweeten brown rice with some honey, which can help soothe the burn of the stomach acids.

Apple Honey

Apple honey is delicious remedy that you can use to treat acid reflux. You can make easily make your own apple honey. Peel a few apples, then core and slice them and then put them in a pan. Pour in enough water to cover the apples, and then simmer this for about three hours until it forms a thick, brown mixture. Pour this into an airtight container and store it in the fridge. Take a tablespoon of the apple honey as needed.
