Alkaline Food to Prevent Reflux

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD), also known as acid reflux, is a condition where acid flows back up to the esophagus from the stomach and upper intestines. Eating alkaline foods such as fruits and vegetables can help prevent and combat the side effects of acid reflux, as GERD is caused by long-term pH imbalances in the body.

pH Balance

    Acid reflux is caused by a prolonged pH imbalance in the body. The pH scale goes from 0 to 14, with 0 to 7 representing acidic foods and 7.1 to 14 representing alkalizing foods. The body tries to maintain an alkalizing pH of 7.4. When the body is unable to keep an alkaline pH balance, acidosis, increased acid in the bloodstream, may occur, which leads to acid reflux. All foods, whether acidic or alkaline, affect the body's pH balance.

Classification

    All foods are classified as either alkaline or acidic. Acidic foods increase acidity in the body; alkalizing foods make the body more alkaline after consumption. Meats and other foods containing protein are generally acidic while fruits and vegetables are alkaline. The average diet in the U.S. is very high in meat, so Americans are at risk for pH imbalances.

Alkaline Foods

    The following foods are alkaline and should be eaten in abundance to help prevent and combat acid reflux: citrus fruits except oranges, watermelon, mango, papaya, asparagus, onions, vegetable juices, parsley, spinach, broccoli, garlic, barley, melons, grapes, apples, pears, kiwi, okra, squash, green beans, beets, celery, lettuce, zucchini, sweet potatoes, quinoa , millet, lentils, wild rice, corn, bananas, cherries, pineapple, peaches, avocados, carrots, tomatoes, mushrooms, cabbage, peas, cauliflower, turnips, olives, oils, coconuts, chestnuts, hazelnuts and goat cheese.
