Healthy Benefits of Boiled Peanuts

Peanuts can be counted as an exceptionally nutritional food, and boiled peanuts offer more health benefits than raw or roasted varieties. Boiled peanuts are a great choice for a heart-healthy snack.

Antioxidants

    The boiling process draws out important antioxidants, or phytochemicals, from the shell of the peanut. Up to four times more antioxidants can be found in boiled peanuts than in raw or roasted varieties.

Disease Prevention

    A study by Alabama A&M University researchers showed that the antioxidants in boiled peanuts help protect the body against cancers, heart disease, diabetes and other diseases.

Nutrition

    Boiled peanuts contain approximately 89 calories per 28 gram serving. Each serving contains 6.2 grams of total fat including 0.9 grams of saturated fat, 6 grams of carbohydrates and 3.8 grams of protein.

Other Considerations

    Raw peanuts, which are "green" or just ripe, will take less time to boil. They can be seasoned with a variety of healthy items such as herbs and peppers.

Fun Fact

    Because the peanut appeared in the United States in the 17th century during slave trade, it was assumed that peanuts originated in Africa. The peanut actually originally appeared in Brazil and Peru, and has since made its way around the world as a common natural food.
