Protein is an essential part of any diet. However, not all foods with protein are healthy. In fact, there are some very unhealthy protein choices that make their way on the average person's plate every day. Consider adding these healthy foods to your diet to ensure you are getting your recommended amount of protein, without the fat, sodium and additives that your body doesn't need.
Tofu
Raw tofu contains about 10 grams of protein per half-cup and is a great low-calorie, low-fat alternative to meat. It is also cholesterol free. Tofu contains isoflavines which are known to fight cholesterol.
Beans
All beans have a high-protein content, are low in fat and are an excellent source of fiber. Beans also contain antioxidants, which slow the damage of free radicals in the body.
Eggs
A single egg has 6.3 grams of protein. If you are concerned about fat and cholesterol, simply use all egg whites, or mix only one yolk with the whites of two or three eggs. The white part is the part packed with protein, while the yolk is fat.
Nuts
Nuts are a great source of protein. Even though they have high fat content, most nuts contain the "good" fat. Stick to raw nuts rather than those roasted and salted commercially, and you have a great protein-packed snack.
Meat
Meats contain all of the necessary amino acids for optimum health. All meats are not created equal, however, so stick to lean, fresh meats that are broiled, roasted or baked. Avoid meats that have been processed, such as lunch meats and hot dogs, which have unhealthy additives and high fat and sodium content.
