Acid reflux affecting the throat--called gastroesophageal reflux, or GERD--causes sufferers to experience a burning sensation, chest pain, regurgitation, hoarse throats, and even coughs. Those who endure acid reflux night after night often treat this miserable condition with anti-acids. However, long-term use of these pills can cause health problems; permanently reducing symptoms through lifestyle changes initiates a more lasting effect.
Food Journal
A weakening of the flap between the stomach and the esophagus, not an overproduction of stomach acid, leads to acid reflux. This means that eating acidic food will not cause acid reflux. However, foods like coffee, tea, alcohol, tomatoes, citrus and spicy items inflame an already irritated esophagus. Each person's reaction is different, so keep a food journal and note the foods consumed during a meal. Then, within two hours, write down any acid-reflux symptoms. Observe the pattern(s) to figure out which foods to avoid.
Eating Habits
Stay away from high-fat foods, especially fast food, because these weaken the LES, letting more acid into the esophagus. They also stay in the stomach longer, increasing the duration of symptoms. Pick meal items that are high in carbohydrates, such as rice, bread and pasta, because they occupy the acid.
However, this will not not treat the root of the problem. When reducing acid reflux symptoms, what you eat is not as important as when and how you eat it. Don't eat right before exercising or bedtime. Have dinner at least two to three hours before going to bed, eating only a small snack if needed. Remain seated upright while eating and for at least 45 minutes afterward. Snack during the day, eating small, frequent meals, and always avoid overeating.
Other Techniques
Because gravity works against acid reflux symptoms, use an extra pillow at night to prop up the head by 6 to 8 inches. Quit smoking, as smoking weakens the LES, and the weaker the flap, the more acid it allows up. Stay healthy and maintain a normal weight, because overweight people have a higher risk of GERD.
